Art Nouveau Style in Prompts and Pictures
Art nouveau style is ornament that seems to be growing. Between about 1890 and 1910 it flourished across Europe and the United States as a deliberate break from the 19th-century habit of imitating older periods, and it went by local names such as Jugendstil in Germany and Modernismo in Spain. The giveaway is the line. It runs long and asymmetrical, curls like a vine tendril or a flower stalk, and now and then snaps like a whip. In architecture it takes over the structure, so columns turn into thick vines and windows bulge like membranes. Buds and insect wings are typical motifs. The pictures below share one subject, a dragonfly settled among irises, and each was made in a different medium with FLORA's AI image generator.

All eight frames keep the same dragonfly and iris stalks while the material changes around them. The prompt behind each picture sits in its caption.

How to prompt for art nouveau style
Typing the style name by itself rarely gets you far. Most models fall back on the best-known version, a poster woman with long hair inside a circular halo, even when the subject is a dragonfly. State your subject plainly, then spend the next stretch of the prompt on the line, with words like whiplash, sinuous and asymmetrical and stems that wrap the border. For a stiffer, more upright variant, mention Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Scottish designer whose geometric line shaped the Austrian branch of the movement.
Palette and medium come after the line. Sage green and mustard suit most subjects, with gold added when the piece should look precious. Each medium also draws the curve its own way, in lead for stained glass, gold wire for a pendant and solid black for pen and ink. Lighting can stay plain.
Three prompts to copy
- Lithograph poster. Art nouveau color lithograph poster of a dragonfly resting on tall iris stalks, whiplash curves and vine tendrils wrapping an arched frame, flat muted sage, ochre and violet, fine black outline, soft paper texture, no text
- Stained glass. Leaded stained glass window of a dragonfly on iris stalks in art nouveau style, sinuous lead lines tracing the wings and stems, opalescent green and amber glass, backlit by afternoon sun, no text
- Jewelry. Gold and translucent enamel pendant shaped like a dragonfly perched on an iris stalk, art nouveau style, wings in pale green and blue enamel, curving stem forming the loop, black velvet background, macro photograph, no text
What tends to go wrong
Clutter is the most common miss. The model packs every corner with roses and scrollwork until the dragonfly gets lost, and asking for open space around it usually fixes that. A symmetrical frame with straight borders drags the image toward art deco, so request an asymmetrical composition by name. Poster prompts also sprout fake title banners, which is why each one here closes with no text.
Where art nouveau style works
Botanical products are the obvious fit, since a frame of curling stems on a tea or skincare label says natural and handmade before anyone reads a word. Generate the illustration in FLORA, then run it through AI mockups, whose photoreal product shots include cups, to check that the border survives a curved surface.
Posters and book illustration were home ground for the movement, and the format still suits covers and editorial work. A single creature at the center, an ornamental border and a flat field of color stay legible at thumbnail size. If you have a photo of your own, Photo to Drawing redraws it with sketch-style lines that a prompt can then decorate.
Interior and set designers get a vocabulary from art nouveau architecture that models follow closely, with ironwork that grows like vines, columns that branch into stems and window frames that swell outward. For a client render built on your own massing, start in AI architectural rendering and layer the ornament on once the volumes are right.

FAQs
What are the characteristics of art nouveau?
The undulating, asymmetrical line comes first, and in posters and prints everything else gives way to it, form, texture, space and color included. Architects used a free mix of ironwork, glass, ceramic and brick to make interiors where structure and decoration can't be told apart. That was a direct challenge to the older ideal of clear, rational structure.
What was the style before art nouveau?
In England two movements led into it, the Aestheticism of Aubrey Beardsley, who leaned on the expressive power of organic line, and the Arts and Crafts movement of William Morris, which argued for a vital style in the applied arts. On the Continent the painters Paul Gauguin and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec fed it with their own experiments in expressive line.
Is Tiffany art deco or art nouveau?
Art nouveau. Louis Comfort Tiffany, the American glassmaker, ranks among the movement's leading figures alongside the French glass and jewelry designer René Lalique. For any lamp or vase you are unsure about, look at the line. Plant-like and flowing means nouveau, while stepped and symmetrical points to deco.
