The Scene Art Style, from MySpace Doodles to AI Prompts
The scene art style is the drawing style that grew up around the 2000s scene subculture, which split off from emo early in the decade and spread through MySpace. Its characters dress the way scene kids did at the subculture's peak, and the drawings share most of their conventions with emo art of the same years. Bodies are thin, sometimes little more than stick figures, under oversized caricature heads with big eyes taken loosely from anime. Hair gets the most attention. It is teased high, straightened, swept across one eye and often striped in raccoon-tail bands of color. Lines stay sketchy enough to pass for pencil, and the palette is mostly black with a few neon accents.
Scene art style examples made in FLORA
Raccoon eyeliner and raccoon-tail hair are two of scene's signature looks, so a raccoon was the obvious mascot. The same lanky raccoon, with a pink-streaked black fringe hiding one eye, carries all eight images below. Each was made in FLORA's AI image generator, and its caption is the full prompt.

How to prompt for scene art style
Describe the hair before anything else, since most of the look lives there. Name the side-swept fringe and the eye it covers, the teased volume on top and the color of each streak. Proportions come next, with a head nearly as wide as the shoulders on a thin neck and stick-thin limbs. Then pick an eye type. Anime eyes with highlights suit the 2000s version, while flat round blanks recall a chibi look that was more popular in the 2010s. Say sketchy or scratchy line art outright. Keep black dominant with one or two neon shades, and scatter a few period motifs such as hearts, skulls or checkerboard. Striped arm warmers or a studded belt, both straight from scene fashion, finish the figure.
Three prompts to copy
- Digital drawing. Scene art style digital drawing of a lanky raccoon with a pink-streaked black fringe over one eye, large round blank eyes, stick-thin limbs, striped arm warmers and a studded belt, sketchy scratchy line art, mostly black palette with neon pink and electric blue accents, checkerboard floor, doodled stars and hearts, no text
- Gel pen doodle. Black gel pen doodle on lined notebook paper of a lanky raccoon with a pink-streaked black fringe over one eye in scene art style, oversized head on a thin body, wide anime eyes, scratchy overlapping strokes, neon pink highlighter on the fringe stripes, little skulls and stars in the margins, no text
- Painted sneaker. Hand-painted black canvas high-top sneaker, side panel showing a lanky raccoon with a pink-streaked black fringe over one eye in scene art style, acrylic paint with sketchy outlines, neon green and pink accents, checkerboard toe cap, plain heel without a patch or logo, studio product photo, no text
What tends to go wrong
Ask for neon and a model can hand back a full rainbow with kandi bracelets, which lands closer to TikTok-era scenecore than to the 2000s look, where black did most of the work. Clean vector lines are the second problem, and naming a pencil or gel pen medium often roughens them. A big head on a small body can also make a figure read younger than intended, so if you swap the raccoon for a person, give them an adult age and keep the limbs long.
Where scene art style works
With events like the 2022 When We Were Young festival pointing to a revival of interest, cover art for metalcore, crunkcore and electropop acts is the most natural home for the style. Describe the cover in one prompt and the AI album cover generator returns a titled album cover, two single covers and a looping motion cover.
The style came of age on MySpace pages crowded with glitter stickers and flashy GIFs, so profile art suits it too, and MySpace-inspired networks such as SpaceHey have found new users since. The YouTube banner maker builds a hero banner, a matching avatar and a color variant at YouTube's 2560x1440 size, a fair test of a neon-on-black character at icon and header size.

FAQs
What is scenecore style?
Scenecore is a TikTok-born exaggeration of scene, shaped by scene electropop and SoundCloud digicore, and it looks a lot like kandi raver fashion. The word has a sour history too. Metalheads once threw "scenecore" at scene bands as an insult.
Is scene a poser style?
The poser charge is nearly as old as scene. "Scene queen" surfaced in hardcore circles around 2002 as a put-down for people thought to dress alternative to get close to band members, and only later turned into a title for MySpace trendsetters. The usual defense is that taking part meant engaging with the music and culture as well as wearing the clothes.
What kinds of scene styles are there?
Scene had regional cousins with names of their own, among them Floggers in Argentina, Coloridos in Brazil, Pokemón in Chile and Shamate in China. They shared the bright clothes, exaggerated hair and eyeliner of the US version, often paired with emo pop, indie rock, hip hop or EDM.
